Police now occupying the present Station which is to be demolish- ed and rebuilt. The necessary Drawings and Specifications have been completed. Revised sketch plans have been prepared for a new Police Station of 5 storeys, which contains a Duty Room, Cells, Quarters for 57 Indians and 68 Chinese Police, with Mess Rooms, Kitchens, etc., 4 Flats for Married European Officers, and a Flat for 6 Single European Officers. All the Flats are self contained, and are provided with the usual servants' quarters.

218. Senior Officers' Quarters, May Road.-Sketch plans were prepared for the erection of two 5 storey blocks containing 20 Flats as follows:-5 Flats of 5 rooms, and 5 Flats of 3 rooms in one block, and 10 Flats of 4 rooms in the other block. All the Flats are self contained, and are provided with the usual accommodation for servants in detached blocks in the rear. Working drawings were commenced with a view to beginning work on the site preparation and approach road. These had, however, to be deferred owing to shortage of Staff.

219. Junior Technical School: New Laboratory Wing. The work consisted of the erection of a two storey addition having a laboratory, preparation room and balance room on the ground floor, and two class rooms on the first floor. The annex is connected to the existing school by a covered way. A con- tract was let to Messrs. Hewart Shing Yick & Co. and was signed on the 27th October, 1933. Progress was slow: the brickwork was completed up to the 1st floor level and the wood casing for the reinforcing concrete floor was fixed in position by the end of the year.

220. One Coal Burning Crematorium of two Chambers.— This work was referred to in paragraph 178 of last year's report. Satisfactory progress was made, and the buildings were completed in June.

221. Preparation of Children's Playing Grounds.-The work consisted of the preparation of four playing grounds at Praya East, Wanchai, and Blake Gardens in Hong Kong, and at Tong Mi Road and Shantung Street in Kowloon. The work generally comprised the levelling of the sites, the erection of boundary fences, the provision of seats, and store sheds for equipment. Contracts were let in December and good progress had been made at the end of the year.

222. Government House and City Development Scheme :- (a) Relaying the Storm Water Drain in Wardley Street to the East of the new site of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. This work which involved the laying of 462 linear

feet of 36" diameter storm water drain was commenced early in August and completed two months later notwithstanding many difficulties due to obstructions which were encountered in the trenches.

(b) Realignment of Trunk Water Main. The 24" steel trunk main in Wardley Street had to be realigned to clear the new Bank site. It was necessary to relay a total length of 550 feet of main in Des Voeux Road and Queen's Road via the new thoroughfare on the east side of the new bank site. The work was completed in October.

223. Reconstruction of Bowen Road Conduit. This work was completed in 1932. The expenditure in 1933 represented the payment of the retention money to the Contractors.

224. Free Connections in Rider Main Area-3,268 meters were fixed under this vote during the year in the old Rider Main areas to complete the work commenced in 1932. These meters were fixed free of charge (see paragraph 56 of the 1982 Report). The work was completed in July which was one month ahead of the time originally given for completion. Approxim- ately only 120 houses in the City are now without metered ser- vices. A number of street fountains have been left where neces- sary for the use of those houses and the floating population.

225. Construction of Timber Jetty at Shaukiwan.-This work consisted of the construction of a timber jetty for refuse disposal, together with the construction of an approach road. The work was commenced in February and was completed in April.

226. Temporary Building at Laichikok Prison. The work consisted of the erection of a two storey building within the existing prison confines to accommodate 200 prisoners. A con- tract was let to Messrs. Tak Hing & Co. and work commenced on 2nd October, 1933. Very good progress was made and the building was nearing completion by the end of the year.

227. Tsun Ian Police Station: Additions.-The work con- sisted of the erection of a new Cell on the ground floor, and the addition of a bedroom and bathroom on the first floor over the Charge Room. The work was completed in December.

228. Garages at Tai Po.-The work consisted of the erection

of a three stall garage for the Police on the main road at Tai Po and adjoining the existing garage. Also the erection of a two stall garage near the Tai Po Land Office. The Contract for the Police garage was let to Messrs. Hewart Shing Yick and
